The Birth of SWAT Snipers

SWAT sniper tactics were developed during the 1960s as a response to specific hostage situations. From here on out, SWAT teams would evolve with new tactics and technologies to overcome various threats, including the active shooter scenario, terrorist attack, and arrest under siege. SWAT snipers in Florida involve themselves in a study with intense training aimed at being accurate weapons that may neutralize threats.

Hostage Rescue The sniper provides critical observation of the hostage-taker in hostage situations and alternative means of a tactical quick resolution of the situation

Crowd Control Snipers may be stationed to observe the scene at large gatherings, or civil disturbances and intervene as necessary

The 20th Anniversary Spring Sniper Shootout was this year, and oh what a great time it was, with another extremely competitive field showcasing the State of Florida’s best snipers. It is very clear that the individuals competing have worked hard over the last year as their skill set levels are improved greatly and accuracy achieved on the demanding courses of fire really stood out.

FSA was also provided the opportunity to host Sergeant Steve Fisher from the Greeley (CO) Police Department, who presented a Debrief on an incident last summer (June 2023) in which his SWAT team was engaged with an armed, barricaded subject. Practical knowledge on a myriad of techniques used for this situation was presented and thanks go out to Sergeant Fisher for taking the time out of his schedule to attend our event.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jovani Santos and Nick Cockriel of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (Team 1) for taking the team win in the 2024 Spring Sniper Shootout. Second-place team winners were Daniel Levanti and Ben Smith of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

CONGRATULATIONS Bryan Gubba, Seminole County Sheriff’s Office- Individual Top Sniper Award-winner; Nick Cockriel, Orange County Sheriff’s Office (Team 1) was the runner-up at the individual sniper competition.

Becoming a SWAT sniper requires much training and dedication. Florida’s SWAT snipers are taken through quite vigorous physical and mental training to make sure that they are both physically fit and prepared mentally for any high-stress situations. Their training usually involves;

Marksmanship Extensive training in marksmanship, including long-range shooting, close-quarters battle, and night vision shooting.

Tactical Skills Advanced tactical training, including room clearing, hostage rescue, and counter-terrorism tactics.

Surveillance Techniques Training in surveillance and reconnaissance techniques including the use of advanced optics and surveillance equipment.

Psychological Training Training in stress management, decision-making under pressure, and crisis intervention.

The Psychological Effects of the Job

Being a SWAT sniper requires great hard work and mental pressure. Quite often, those officers face traumatic scenes and are required to make very crucial decisions in terms of their being life-changing and death-giving, which is under extreme pressure. SWAT snipers also receive constant and continued psychological counseling in the backdrop of coping with stresses and trauma attached to their jobs.
